I recently had the pleasure of taking our surf camp program on the road, southward to San Francisco. This time of year the weather and ocean can be a little more forgiving in central California than on the Oregon coast so we thought we'd give it a shot...
Mother nature played along, volunteers emerged from our ever growing network, and we received some love from the locals. Specifically, the great folks at Santa Cruz based outdoor school Adventure Out, who let us operate under their surf camp permit and happily donated gear for the day.
And so with all the pieces in place, we are able to run our first Bay Area kids camp for youth from KIPP San Francisco College Preparatory School.
It was not a big camp (3x tenacious students and 1x rad music teacher), but it was a great group and their school's values were embodied by each one of them. They all surfed better than I did on my first day (excellence); They all cheered each other on wave after wave and fall after fall (community); They all charged forth into the ocean despite a water temp of 52 degrees and a steady November breeze (grit); And they all seemed pretty darn satisfied with their adventure by the end (joy).
As always, half the fun of our camps is had by the volunteers and I certainly had a blast at my first camp down in California!
I like to send out a huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen! We hope to do it again soon.
