These innovative nonprofits, many formed within the last five years, set sail with surfing’s new aloha and a growing trend in giving back.

The goal is not only to raise awareness and financial support for the new breed of surf-related social and environmental causes represented here, but also facilitate collaboration with media and businesses alike.

This year’s event, to be held at the Brooklyn Brewery on February 7, will feature a DJ, raffle items (the list of items grows), snacks, and gift bags for the first 100 people to get a ticket. Attendees can sample some fantastic local brews through discounted token purchase. Tokens: $5 or 5 for $20. Tickets $30 at the door. Proceeds benefit all participating nonprofits.

This past week I was able to visit Keith Ellison, a peace-corps volunteer who has been serving in Chicama, Peru. As part of his service, Keith has been assisting with a free after-school surf school program for kids in the rural town in northern Peru. It was awesome to be able to bring a bunch of suits down for the program and spend an afternoon with the kids in the water–so much fun being had. Hope you all enjoy seeing your donations at work! Many thanks to Keith and Erin Dougherty, another Peace Corps volunteer in Chicama who has agreed to help with the distribution of the suits during the upcoming year!

“This application is intended to serve as an easy to install fundraiser application that leverages a variety of “freemium” services. The application is served using Sinatra, using Google Checkout for payment processing services, Heroku for hosting, MongoHQ for database services and Amazon S3 for asset storage. The motivation for the original site (a fundraiser for the non-profit Warm Current) was to create a bare bones website to collect money for a fundraiser and to spread the message with social media.”

We hate asking for money. For 2 years we’ve gotten by without asking, surviving on volunteers and out-of-pocket expenses. As such, we’ve still made a large impact, donating over 250 wetsuits across 4 continents and teaching countless underserved kids to surf. That has simply scratched the surface of the need that exits, and therein lies our need to grow. The Faces of Warm Current is about involving out benefactors; making them a part of what we do here.

We’re asking for a small $5 donation and in return you get to join us in our adventures. For $5 we’ll give you a small square that will comprise a large mosaic on the side of our trailer. The trailer will be used in our kids surf camps and the $5 will be used to purchase the trailer, new kids wetsuits and new surfboards. Equipment essential to executing our mission. Imperial Motion is a lifestyle brand out of Tacoma, WA. The group behind the brand is as genuine and true as they come. Not to mention their collections are sick!

They helped us put together our first round of Warm Current tees and hoodies. They turned out great and we ended up making a few bucks during our kids surf camps at the Clean Water Classic. In addition to Warm Current tees, they surprised us with a co-lab IM/Warm Current design! We’re stoked on the creative and the chance to work with such a great group of folks at IM.

A crew of professional Hawaiian surfers, including world longboard champion Bonga Perkins, came out to volunteer and sign autographs. They gave lessons and even got in the icy NW water to push kids into waves. The kids we’re stoked and the Hawaiians freezing.
